The idea for UX of Dim Sum as a design thinking workshop came around summer 2018 but it was not until December when I hinted during the panel at [[Building a Better Community]] that it would be a real workshop. I wasn't sure how people would respond to this. I wasn't sure whether it would make sense.
Not an issue.
The first iteration of this workshop took place on June 1, 2019. It was great. The workshop was updated and held again on September 15, 2019.
## Description
> Let's go _yum cha!_
`Literally meaning "drink tea" in Cantonese, going to _yum cha_ is an important Hong Kong breakfast/brunch tradition and dining experience. For the uninitiated, _dim sum_ can be intimidating. Through a workshop focused on design thinking activities, designers and non-designers alike can practice concept modeling, ethnographic research, and mapping. You get a chance to think about what it means to design for accessibility and usability through a _yum cha_ experience.`
`This is a uniquely-designed event that focuses on niche experiences. Whether you come only for the food or stay for the workshop, you'll walk away with:`
- `A better understanding of design thinking, journey mapping`
- `A set of "building blocks" for creating a flow for new experiences`
- `Fun ways for understanding user needs`
### Logistics
Running a workshop in a dim sum restaurant was not feasible. Booking a private room was also not optimal since that would also take away from the dim sum experience. Don't you know that waiting in line for hours is part of the ritual?!
The workshop was composed of 2 parts:
1) we feast first as part of the divergence part of design thinking;
2) we workshop second.
### Themes
Ethnographic research, social interaction, inclusion
